Moving Tip - Getting Organized
The following moving tip was offered by a Moving California website visitor:
When I considered moving, all I could think about was being overwhelmed with ponderous piles of clutter.
What really saved me was being able to make four friendly piles to simply put the things in and then not worry about it until later. I built each of the piles inside moving boxes.
Thanks to the moving company I selected, I got a variety of moving and packing supplies I needed well in advance of my move.
Separating Your Belongings
The four piles I used were: keeps, toss, maybes and special give-aways:
- Items to Keep - there's no way I can through these things out, I can’t be without them. These are sentimental/ heirloom essentials; things that fit; look great; serve a great purpose; old standbys-- you get the point. Everything in this group is worth moving.
- Items to Toss - it's really obvious that these items need to be thrown away and you have no remorse in doing so because they're: broken; out of style; don't fit; you don't like being around them; they no longer reflect the style you're trying to project; you already have duplicates that are better; etc. These things aren't worth moving or packing.
- Maybes - this is the most difficult category. This is where it's easy to get stuck and end up keeping a lot of things that could have been discarded. The great thing about this category is you simply put all those things that you're not sure you want to move or pack in it and decide later: things that don't really fit now, you're not sure if you'll really use it, you thought it was kind of nice but you're not sure if it's your style, someone gave it to you and you feel guilty about discarding it; etc. The wonderful thing about the ‘maybe’ group is that once you put things in this pile, they are out of your regular living space. When you are away from items long enough, you loose interest in them. You feel more confident about making a decision about their future destination. Often you're better able to let them go. You may come to realize that they weren't worth moving or packing in the first place and they're not even worth putting into storage.
