Packing Tips
The packing tips here have been compiled through first-hand moving and packing experience. They're designed to help California movers pack better so there will be fewer headaches before, during and after your relocation. You may have your California mover do all or some of the packing for you or you may decide to handle the packing chores yourself and save your money for movers to actually haul your furniture. Then again, you could be handling the move completely on your own or you may just need to put a few things in a self storage unit for while.
Doing the Packing Yourself
Remember that if you are packing yourself but having California movers pick up and deliver your household belongings, movers will not accept responsibility for damage to items they didn't pack unless the outside of the carton is damaged. Therefore, it's important that you follow some good packing tips to avoid problems.
You might consider having your movers handle the packing up of things that are delicate or valuable. Not only are they experienced but they should take responsibility if damage occurs.
You can save money by packing yourself when it comes time to moving. If you're putting things away in storage you'll need to do your own packing anyway.
Packing Moving Boxes
Moving California has a separate page dedicated to packing moving boxes, so we won't spend too much time here discussing that topic. However, you'll want to always use good quality moving supplies, including sturdy moving boxes, a good tape dispenser, strong tape and a good supply of blank wrapping paper and bubble wrap for cushioning. See our Moving Supplies page for more information on what you'll need to handle packing chores yourself.
- When packing or storing furniture, wrap it with blankets, towels, or old linens for scratch protection. Furniture legs should also be wrapped to prevent damage.
- Chairs should be stacked seat-to-seat with paper in between.
- Pack your jewelry, family heirlooms, sports memorabilia, photo albums or other priceless items yourself. Move them yourself too, either in the car or as carry-on luggage, if size allows.
